Aunt Kathy is in New Zealand

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year folks!

I am keeping track of Eva stories and generating lots of new pictures. When I get back to my computer at work (and faster downloading than dial up) I will post and upload some more stories and pictures.

As the title says, Aunt Kathy and Uncle David are in New Zealand. We are thinking about them and hoping they're having a great trip.

Samson

Back before Chrsitmas in 2004, when David and I first started the adoption process., I went to 1, and only 1, MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) meeting. It was fun... they had a little presentation on using polymer clay to make ornaments that represent each of the bible stories. They suggested hanging them on a tree for the child and letting them pick an ornament each night leading up to Christmas, then telling them the story about it. I thought it was a great idea, and since I didn't have a child yet I had extra time. So, I made a whole bunch of little ornaments... I made a rainbow, an arc, loaf of bread with a fish, a baby in a basket, a sling shot, a laddar, the arc, a man in a great fish, the walls of Jerico, a house with blood over the door representing Passover, milk and honey, Wine and water, A burning bush, Samson and the pillars, .... I know I am forgetting some, but I am sure you get the picture. So, this year, after Thanksgiving, we bought Eva her own little Christmas tree. It lights up with fiber-optics... it's really cool actually. And it is on her little table where her chair is. She actually does enjoy picking the ornaments off the tree and hearing the stories... her favorite ornament thus far has been the burning bush.

So, now I've set the scene. This morning, Eva insisted on having cereal for breakfast. So I gave her a bowl and set it on her little table (the one with her tree on it) where she sits on her little chair to eat. She's eating, I was reading, when all of a sudden, she asks in a very annoyed voice, "Who is this man looking at me?" I look up to see her staring right at Samson who is at eye level on the tree. I told her it was Samson and that when he obeyed God, he was very strong. But, when he disobeyed he got weak. I told her about how God gives us our strength. She asked me a couple of questions and re-stated what I said. I was thinking, "Cool... she likes the story." Not even a minute after that thought, she was obviously agitated at seeing Samson at eye level and emphatically declares, "I no want to see him, put him by the bloody house." Apparantly her view of things is a little different than mine. I laughed so hard that I cried.

Boobies

How's that for a title?

Eva still has her fascination with boobies, and this morning she informed me that she has "man-boobs." I told her she didn't have man boobs, but that hers are just little because she is still very young but that when she gets older she will get bigger boobs. She listened very carefully, and then with all the seriousness a two year old can muster, looked me in the eyes and informed me, "When I older, I go Malmart and get big boobies." Yes... my daughter thinks you can buy them at Walmart.

1 and a half years

Today is the one and a half year anniversary of the day we first met Eva.

Eva was shaving in this picture... I think she's got David's expression exactly right.

Why?

Eva has entered into the asking why phase of development, and I must admit that I love it. I do not think I have ever really grown out of that phase. It is something that I completely want to encourage in her, for two reasons: 1. I want her to think that I am capable and willing to answer her questions so that when she's older she will still ask me them. 2. It is the foundation of a scientific mind, and as a Chemist, this is something I very much appreciate.

So, we had a conversation this morning that started with getting ready for work and ended with a discussion of the societal evolution of mankind. It went like this:

"Eva, Come on...we need to get ready for school now."
"Why?"
"Because we're late."
"Why?"
"I spent to much time talking this morning."
"Why?"
"Because I was upset and needed to vent."
"Why?"
"I am just a little crabby and irrational right now."
"Why?"
"Because I haven't got enough sleep lately."
"Why?"
"I've been staying up late grading papers."
"Why?"
"I have to get my students grades calculated and I am behind schedule."
"Why?"
"Because it's the end of the semester."
"Why?"
"A semester only lasts 17 weeks"
"Why?"
"Because it was designed around an agricultural historical viewpoint. Education has historically been valued during the non-growing season because historically our society has grown out of an agricultural viewpoint wherein the majority of financial gain was made during the growing season, thus, limiting time that could be spent on study during the summer season."

She didn't ask why after that. Seriously though...think how much cooler our conversations would be as adults if we didn't outgrow asking "why."

Two-year-old

Dr. of Chemistry

As those of you know who read this, I have a Doctorate Degree in Chemistry. Well, we've told Eva that her mommy is a Doctor...of chemistry, so that she doesn't confuse me with her medical doctor. At least, that's the plan. She will tell anyone who asks that her mommy is a Doctor of Chemistry and that I work in the lab at the college. In any case, we were over on a playdate the other day and the people we were visiting had a toy stethoscope. Eva was very excited to play with it... put it on her hears and came up to me to listen to my heart. She looked me straight in the eyes, and said "I listen to heart now. I Doctor of Chemistry."

She gets it...but not really. Other than that, she is her usually bossy self. This morning she found my red pen and papers that I was grading the night before. She told me, "You losing my pen, mommy. You need lose your own." (translation: losing = using).

Big Girl

Eva continues to do and say amazing things... I am just too busy to record all of them. Next week is the last week of classes before finals week and I am behind on my grading in all of my courses. It's harder than it used to be to keep up.

Eva is definitely doing the two-year-old thing about "I can do it myself." If I--without thinking--zip up her coat for her, she has to unzip it and do it again herself. Everything is that way and I am having to alot over half an hour just to get her dressed in the morning. I was told that she's sharing her potty-training candy at daycare/preschool...if the big kids go she thinks they should have candy too. She also still prefers to play with the boys.

Here's some pictures:
